ATHE's Religion and Theatre Focus Group Seeks Panels for the

2009 ATHE/AATE Conference in New York City

The Religion and Theatre (R&T) Focus Group encourages you to organize sessions on themes related to spiritual performance for the 2009 ATHE/AATE conference. The phrase "religion and theatre" can be interpreted in any number of ways, and the R&T Focus Group hopes to showcase a diverse range of topics and theoretical approaches at the conference. We believe work about religion and theatre can offer valuable perspectives on the 2009 conference theme—"Risking Innovation."

The R&T Focus Group is committed to supporting work that broadens and deepens the exciting and rigorous discourse surrounding the performative practices of spiritual belief. We are especially interested in work that challenges definitions of "religious performance" and that confronts preconceptions about the place of belief in theatre/performance studies.

If you plan to submit an R&T session, we encourage you to contact the Focus Group's Conference Planner, Jill Stevenson, at jstevenson@mmm.edu and tell her about your session idea. In addition, if you have a paper idea, feel free to send it to Jill as well. She will pass it along to the R&T listserv to help you reach other people with related interests and with whom you might organize a session.

The deadline for session proposals is November 1st. Submission forms and details are available at: http://www.riskinginnovation.com/

The 2009 ATHE/AATE conference will take place in New York City at the Marriott Marquis hotel in Times Square, and will run from Saturday, August 8th through Tuesday, August 11th. If you have any questions about the conference or about the R&T Focus Group, please contact Jill Stevenson (jstevenson@mmm.edu).
